Art Psychotherapy
work with children

Art Supplies Table

Art Psychotherapy offers children a safe, creative, and supportive space to express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words. Through drawing, painting, clay, storytelling, play, and image-making, children can communicate emotions, experiences, and inner worlds in a natural and developmentally appropriate way.

No artistic skill is needed. The focus is not on creating “good” art, but on the process of expression, exploration, and emotional understanding.

Art psychotherapy can support children experiencing:

  • Anxiety or low mood

  • Bereavement and loss

  • Trauma or difficult life experiences

  • Emotional or behavioural challenges

  • Family changes or separation

  • Low self-esteem

  • School-related difficulties

  • Neurodiversity, including autism and ADHD

  • Social or communication difficulties

Art Psychotherapy

With children

Sessions are tailored to the individual child’s needs and pace, helping them to build emotional resilience, self-awareness, confidence, and healthier ways of coping.

The therapeutic relationship provides a consistent and confidential environment where children can feel seen, heard, and supported. Creative work may help children process experiences safely, regulate emotions, and develop a greater sense of security and wellbeing.

Where appropriate, parents or carers may also be supported as part of the therapeutic process while maintaining the child’s privacy and emotional safety.
